Crunchyroll has been hyping the anime adaptation of Spy x Family ahead of its spring release date, and it’s easy to understand why. Based on the manga by Tatsuya Endo, the series promises to bring action, suspense, and plenty of humor to our screens. So, when can fans expect Spy x Family? And what do we know about the new anime so far?

What is the release date for the ‘Spy x Family’ anime?

Spy x Family will make its anime debut on April 9, 2022. According to the official Spy x Family website, it will be broadcast on Tokyo TV and a number of other networks every Saturday. It’s scheduled for 11 p.m. in Japan.

Crunchyroll indicates that new episodes will drop on the platform “soon after.” Viewers should stay tuned for more details about what time they’ll arrive on the streamer.

Spy x Family will also be a “two-cour split season series,” meaning half of its first outing will release in April. There’s no word on how many episodes will make up each cour or when viewers might see the second half. Anime series that embrace this model typically take a few months between each half of the season. Just look at Attack on Titan Season 4.

What is ‘Spy x Family’ about?

Outside of the release date for Spy x Family, what do we know about the series so far? The synopsis sounds intriguing as ever. The anime follows a talented spy called “Twilight” on a mission to investigate a political leader named Donovan Desmond.

Of course, there’s a slight catch. Twilight must infiltrate social gatherings Donovan goes to, including those at his son’s school. That means taking on a fake family of his own. And Twilight gets much more than he bargained for with his new wife and child. According to Crunchyroll’s synopsis, both come with their own secrets and skill sets:

“Twilight takes on the identity of psychiatrist Loid Forger and starts looking for family members. But Anya, the daughter he adopts, turns out to have the ability to read people’s minds, while his wife, Yor, is an assassin! With it being in each of their own interests to keep these facts hidden, they start living together while concealing their true identities from one another.”

That setup is bound to create some interesting scenarios, both within the home of the “Forger” family and outside of it. And the trailer confirms as much, teasing a fascinating dynamic between the characters, as well as lots of action.

‘Spy x Family’s trailer promises intrigue and plenty of heart

If the premise of Spy x Family doesn’t already have you hooked, the trailer is likely to reel you in. It delivers on everything promised in the description — from the political intrigue to the hilarity sure to ensue when Twilight takes on his new family.

The brief interactions between Loid, Yor, and Anya are sure to make viewers laugh. Between the secrets they’re keeping from one another and Anya’s obliviousness to their situation, their dynamic is gripping. It makes one wonder whether this trio will grow to trust each other over time, becoming something of a real family in the process.

Although the trailer contains plenty of humor, it also teases more serious moments. Loid and Yor both get into intense-looking fights, and the main mission appears to have extremely high stakes. What those are will be revealed when Spy x Family reaches its release date in April. In the meantime, what else do we know about the show?
